SLASH is always busy with a band, doing interviews, guest appearances
and on and on. It's hard to keep track of what he's up to but here in
the Current Events section we try to keep an eye on him for you. If
you have any SLASH sightings to report, email the SLASH page right here.

And on a violent note, San Francisco's CBS 5 reports that authorities announced
Tuesday that a $1000 reward is being offered in connection with an April 19 assault at
the Velvet Revolver concert at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. The assault occurred between
10 and 10:30. Two were injured, one required surgery. Six suspected assailants escaped on
foot. The reward is offered for arrest and prosecution of the assailants. Anyone with
information is asked to call CHP's Sean Korba at 408/499-3990.
Justin went to the Anaheim show this past weekend. He says it was "f*cken awesome, my first
SLASH show." VR played most of the album minus one song and three of the GNR crowd favorites,
"Used to Love Her", "It's So Easy" and "Mr. Brownstone". During Matt's drum solo it sounded
like he threw the intro to "You Could Be Mine" into the mix. All in all, an amazing show.
Justin recently moved to the West Coast from Hawaii, so he's planning to see a lot more of
SLASH and the band. Thanks, Justin!
A professional review came from seattlepi.com. The article was titled "Velvet Revolver Blasts
Everett with Aggressive, Fist-Pumping Rock". They say that in the rock world it's good to be
bad as it is with Velvet Revolver. Then they introduce the band members and describe the
their sound as the kind you crank up to 11 while rocking out and playing air guitar. Scott's
magnetic stage presence is described as undeniable as he undulates and slithers around the
stage. This is the second visit by VR to Washington, but the first where the album
Contraband was out, so more people knew the lyrics. A giant light up sign appeared
during the ballad "Fall To Pieces". Two STP songs were in as were 3 GNR songs. The reviewer
said the only disappointment was the lack of variation from the last visit. The reviewer
says the band has a huge back catalog with STP and GNR songs to pull from but they were the
same as last time. Hoobastank opened, but their set was judged to be uninspired with a
nu-metal sound; a poor man's Incubus. In Hoobastank's case, being bad was bad.
Duff credits his martial arts program in Washington state for helping Scott back to
sobriety after a series of drug busts. Duff said the sessions did more than just rehabilitate
his pal and bandmate; it helped him win back his family. Duff said they went away for about
a month. He learned the key aspects of martial arts, how to be the captain of your own ship,
but now he has his wife and family to keep him going.
Let's back up a little to the night Velvet Revolver played on Jay Leno's show. Larry was
there and got some good pictures from the audience and backstage. We show two good ones
below. Thank you, Larry!
It's official! For weeks now, fans have been wondering who will replace Iron Maiden for
the last seven Ozzfest dates beginning August 23 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It looked
like band news of Ozzfest in March when Iron Maiden said they had to drop out of Ozzfest
in August due to overseas touring commitments. This fired up the guessing game
as to which band would be chosen to appear. All along, Velvet Revolver was a big contender
in the rumor mill. Now they've been chosen to take over on the Ozzfest main stage from
August 23 to September 4 when the tour wraps up in West Palm Beach, Florida. Another
accolade for the band!
There are reprint articles all over the net these days about Velvet Revolver. We like to
share some of these with you so you can enjoy them over your morning coffee. There's a
winner from The Rocky Mountain News, a four page long interview with Scott. They
say someday someone will write Scott's life story which has ranged from musical highs to
personal lows, a million dollar story on its own. It's a small story, though, compared with the career
twist that finds him pairing with much of the defunct GNR to form Velvet Revolver. They say
that Velvet Revolver was widely derided till they made their debut album, Contraband
which silenced many critics. Weiland spoke to Rocky Mountain News because it has a special fondness
for Colorado because he loves snowboarding, his previous shows at Red Rock with STP and his
parents hail from Evergreen, Colorado.
The interview takes off from there in a question and answer
format.
A Good
Read!
Two fans sent in some reviews. "Kristasimon" saw the San Diego show at the Coors Amphitheater
and says it was the best ever seen. A thank you was sent out to the band. Sadly,
"Kristasimon" was grieving over family deaths and friend Tammi went along. The guys were
really hot and threw picks at them! Syrilyn gets the long trip award for flying in from
Alaska to Seattle. They camped out at the back gate where there were four tour buses parked.
Glimpses of the band came out. And this is such a good interview, we'd like to share it all
with you. Click Syrilyn's review.
Velvet Revolver's U.S. Electric Wonderland Tour is starting up, and some reviews have come
in. If you go to a show and feel like sending a short or long review, we'd be pleased to
get it and put it up right here. Right now, we're looking for "our" show to come. When
the show gets close, you'll start seeing ads for it, and if you have a scanner, we'd also
be happy to get those, too! This one is for the Pittsburgh, PA show on May 18.
Surfing into the Gibson site, we found many mentions of SLASH and Velvet Revolver. Why
not go over, and enter to win a guitar, see some mentions of SLASH and a full description
of one of his Gibson's, the goldtop, he's using on the road,
Les Paul Goldtop and look
around the site for all kinds of SLASH and Gibson and contest entry information.
Big news tonight is that Velvet Revolver has added several dates to their Electric Wonderland
Tour. This is the North American headlining tour from the August 11 performance in
Mt.Pleasant, MI through an August 21 gig in Tucson, AZ. These shows overlap with the band's previously
announced Ozzfest stint, which Matt says being August 16 in West Valley City, Utah. It is
now believed that the band will play the last seven dates of the Ozzfest tour in lieu of
Iron Maiden who will drop off the bill on August 20. If you haven't seen the new list, here
they are so no one misses the chance to go:
8/11 Soaring Eagle Casino Mt.Pleasant, MI
8/12 Germain Ampitheatre Columbus, OH
8/13 Tweeter Center Chicago, IL
8/15 Oneida Bingo Casino Greenbay, WI
8/19 Aladin Las Vegas, NV
As part of Ozzfest 2005:
8/23 Journal Pavilion Albuquerque, NM
8/25 Smirnoff Music Center Dallas, TX
8/27 Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Woodlands, TX
8/31 Starwood Amphitheatre Antioch, TN
9/02 Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Charlotte, NC
9/04 Sound Advice Amphitheatre West Palm Beach, FL
In addition to all these dates, VR has been added to the lineup of the Illinois State Fair
in Springfield, IL on August 17.
And another important day is May 9 when Scott will be the musical performer on NBC's
"Last Call with Carson Daly". No further information is available now. Check local listings
for time and station.
The San Francisco Chronicle printed a great story called "It's Only Trashy Rock 'n' Roll,
But We Like It" about our favorite band. It was a pro review of the band's appearance at
the Graham Civic Auditorium, and it was a good one! Kudos for each member of the band and
the music. Check it out at:
Good Review!.
We got this great picture awhile back but misplaced it. (Sorry, Teresa!). She says, "To
SLASH and his VR comrades, I wanted to send you a picture that my husband painted on the door of his
housing unit in Kirkuk, Iraq. He is a fan as I am and I wanted to send this to you. He'll
probably kick my butt when he finds out that I did this but hell, any physical attention I
get after a year apart from him will be appreciated (JUST KIDDING). Happy touring to all!!!!"
Thanks, Teresa, and we hope you two SLASH fans will be back together soon.
Vicki sent us a note that Hit Parader, April issue, is a "Kings of Metal" issue....
"In-Depth Profiles of Metal's greatest Bands!". There's a small picture of GNR on the cover.
This issue has a six-page article on GNR with an interview with Axl from 1992. Then, there's
a sidebar of SLASH with SLASH's responses. Vicki says there's a good full page color of
SLASH and Axl together and one of Duff, Axl and SLASH on stage after a show.
Vicki also said that "Dirty Little Thing" didn't generate the momentum that would allow its
debut on VH-1's Top 20 Countdown. Weeks ago, they showed a clip of it as one of their
"Flavas of the Week", the videos that might make it onto the countdown, but it never did
make it on the list and was never mentioned again. Several people we know also didn't
like the sleazy look of it.
Here's a note on one of SLASH's ex-bandmates, Gilby Clarke. Gilby Will appear on May 28
in Santa Ana, CA at The Galaxy Theater. Former RATT frontman Stephen Pearcy will be
joined by special guest, Gilby Clarke for a one-off with Gilby! If you're in the area,
check this out.
Brian sent in a story from The Seattle Times that Velvet Revolver is working right
now on their second album to be recorded this fall. Duff said it's great being in a band
that doesn't compromise, can go from one extreme to another and still be the same band.
Every day they create in rehearsal, they have to be at the top of their games. Duff also
let it be known that one time he and Courtney Love (Cobain) once sang GNR's "It's So Easy"
together in Vegas as celebrity guests at a clothing store opening. Duff said she was really
sweet and healthy and apologized for Kurt's criticism of GNR, and he told her there no need
to do that. It's all just rock and roll. Duff was evidently one of the last to see Kurt
alive as they flew across country to L.A. together. Duff said Kurt was very down. But
this band, everyone is alive and they have frequent band meetings to talk about business
and take inventory and see that everyone is cool with each other. And we are all stronger
than we were 20 years ago.
Duff has become one of the major spokesmen of the band. We read another article about them
in contactmusic.com. Duff said that so many people said the band would fall apart, and it's
just sweet revenge. People said someone would fall off the wagon, something will happen.
Then they made and released their record. Then they said VR could never manage a tour,
and here they are starting the 11th leg...we've been all over the U.S., Europe, Japan and
Australia; and we'll be going all summer.
If you subscribe to the Velvet Revolver newsletter through their website, you should have
gotten mail about the new merchandise in the band's official store. If you'd like to see
what's there and didn't get the mail, go to the official site at
VR Official site and click on the first bullet
in the group at the left bottom. They say a lot of this will be available as the band
tours, but you can also order here and not have to carry your purchases around. And don't forget those
fabulous t-shirts of SLASH. You can get to their site by going to our Links section
(snakepit.org, scroll down to menus, click on Related Sites). Right at the top is the link
to these great t-shirts.
Pauric in Ireland and Lesley in Manchester both reported on what sounds like a good TV
show. It was called 100 Greatest Albums of all time, and the viewers voted "Appetite for
Destruction" as #9. SLASH told the story of how "Nightrain" got its title. It's a cheap
drink that down & outs drink and was all they could afford. It cost about $2, and they'd
walk down Clark Street singing. He also mentioned that "Sweet Child O' Mine" was a song
he hated for a long time, and when they filmed the video for it, he kicked something out
of the way and you can see him do it on the video. He was asked about the winner,
Radiohead's "OK Computer", and he said he was a big fan and had everything they made.
Thanks, guys!
Duff answered some questions for The San Francisco Chronicle recently. The first
thing they asked him was what was happening with Axl's album. Duff replied that he didn't
know. After GNR, he went to Seattle to college and started having babies. Then Velvet
Revolver popped up. Asked if he would like to hear it, he said not particularly, but
they should get it out after all this time. He feels rock and roll is about spontaneity
and if it takes more than 5 minutes to write, just get rid of it!
Christine sent us a really great review of the Reno show. It's a long one, but it covers
the whole show, and we think you'll find it interesting so we'll do the whole thing
here. Click Christine's review for a good read over your morning coffee.
The biggest news tonight is good for the U.S. Velvet Revolver has announced more tour
dates. These are all with Ozzfest where VR will open for Black Sabbath. The dates begin
August 15. Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Velvet Revolver will all be on the bill till
Maiden drops off on August 20. Other bands are scheduled as well. This schedule comes
straight from Matt Sorum, so you should think of these dates as confirmed. Here's the
latest addition to the U.S. tour schedule:
8/15 West Valley City, Utah
8/16 Salt Lake City, Utah at USANA Pavillion
8/20 Los Angeles, CA at Hyundai Pavilion at Glen Helen
8/23 Albuquerque, NM at Journal Pavilion
8/25 Dallas, TX at Smirnoff
8/27 Houston, Tx at Cynthia J. Woods Pavilion
8/28 San Antonio, TX at Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre
8/31 Nashville, TN at Starwood Ampitheatre
9/02 Charlotte, NC at Verizon
9/04 West Palm Beach, FL at Sound Advice
We have no information yet on pre-sales for these shows. If you watch the band's official
site at velvetrevolver.com, you can watch for these under Tour Dates. There are pre-sales
in March, but none beyond that.
There's a really sweet post about SLASH in the velvetrevolver.com forum. A woman whose
son recently died described how SLASH reached out to her in her time of grief and made
her feel better. Here's where you can read about it and thanks to Heidi who alerted us
to that post. Our sympathies too to the friends and family of this SLASH fan:
SLASH
Phoned Me.
It sounds like the Ottawa show was a winner. Colton says he was there at the March 23 show,
right up front, and the guys rocked the joint hard. He hopes the guys come back there or
to Toronto soon, and this time he'll bring a lot of his buddies so they can witness the ultimate
rock experience. There's a professional review on the net from Jam Review. Pretty
cool. It's at Jam Music Live
Review.
There's another issue of Who Named the Band on the net done by Jam Review, and they
talked to SLASH. It's a good interview. Check it out at
Velvet Excess. SLASH talks in another interview with Jam Review about how he
and Perla get a nanny and go out on the weekends and have a blast. When they are home they
are two normal parents with long hair and tattoos. And there's another professional review
from the Edmonton Sun describing the show there where there were 10,000 in the Rexall
Theatre and the loudest rock and roll heard in years. In fact they fault the band for playing
so loud! Rock on, guys!
Michael from France said the opener was great with SLASH's great guitar. He also said he has
gotten the latest Kerrang!, and SLASH, Dave and Duff are answering the questions of a
group of fans from Sydney, Australia. It has some beautiful pictures, so look for that one.
Thanks, Michael.
Rich sent in an article that just appeared in Rolling Stone where they have a list
called The Immortals. It's the second volume of the mag's tribute to the 100 greatest
artists in rock and roll. The music's innovators are celebrated by their peers and
inheritors. Joe Perry of Aerosmith wrote about Guns N'Roses. The article is too long to
reproduce here so we encourage you to get a copy at the newsstand. Joe said the band opened
for them in 1988, and he was most impressed by their personalities. He said that SLASH
plays what's needed for the song, as opposed to trying to make a tune a showcase for his
guitar technique. It's really a nice write-up on the old GNR. Thanks, Rich.
Just a reminder that the band kicks off their US Electric Wonderland tomorrow and goes till
the end of May. If you have questions as to where, when, etc, check the band's official
site at velvetrevolver.org. If you go inside and click on the second bullet, you should see
Tour Dates. There's a long list there with either BUY which means tickets are on sale now
or TBA which means the ticket sale date will be announced. Sorry but we can't help you get
passes or anything special like that. The band will sometimes be available to sign autographs
and so on and sometimes not. Just go looking forward to seeing the band onstage and anything
else is gravy.
Last time we told you that Velvet Revolver would be playing a new gig
at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. The festival runs July 1 to 16, but we didn't know
the date for VR. Spahr let us know that Velvet Revolver will play on July 3. You can buy tickets
at Montreaux.
Thanks, Spahr!
Which Guitar God is a big SLASH influence and personal friend? Aerosmith's Joe Perry!
Just wanted to let you New York area fans that Joe Perry will be appearing live on Thursday
May 5 at Webster Hall in NYC. Join Joe as he celebrates the release of his new self-titled
album. It's a special one-off live performance of songs from his new album. Tickets go on
sale Monday, April 18 at 10am. Q104.3FM is sponsoring the show and tickets are $1.04. How
can you miss? Tickets go on sale through Joe Perry. Joe's
album is in the stores May 3. SLASH won't be at the show, but he'll be getting the album!
Here's another reference a little closer to home. Camp Freddy is working on its new album,
and they say they are coming along slowly but surely as they try to get all the musicians
together. Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum is the drummer for the band, and they expect to
release their new album later this year. They may make use of special guests. SLASH has
appeared with them on stage several times. We haven't heard that he will or won't be on
the Camp Freddy album, but Matt will definitely be on there.
Velvet Revolver kicked off their Electric Wonderland Show tour in San Diego. Tonight
the show is in Santa Barbara. The tour marks the band's venture into arena shows.
Scott says they have to work hard to keep the intimacy the unit feels during smaller
shows. They are keeping the stage small to keep the band from playing as individuals.
SLASH added that VR has already started working on their sophomore album. They are
taking any downtime to start pre-production because they are really excited about it.
Two new European dates were added today...one for Germany and one for Switzerland. Thanks to
Brian, we learned that Velvet Revolver will be on the list of bands for this year's Montreaux
Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The festival goes from July 1 to July 16, and we don't know
yet which date is VR's. The web site is in French, so maybe more will come out in English
sometime. Also appearing are Alice Cooper, Queens of the Stone Age, Garbage, Kasabian. There will be a special
blues night featuring BB King and Solomon Burke with a tribute to the Stax soul label
with Isaac Hayes and and Booker T & The MGs. So, look for more information on that concert
series. And Brigit from Germany sent us word that the rock-im-park.de show site lists
Velvet Revolver on June 17 at Essen, Grugahalle. There are other festivals that Brigit
sent which we had up...Nurnberg, Rock im Park festival; Nurburgring/Eifel, Rock am Ring
festival and now this new one at Essen. Thanks, Brian and Brigit.
Vicki from West Virginia sent us a lot of magazine information. The June 2005 issue of
Guitar World has a cool Ernie Ball ad with a grainy, black and white
illustrated-looking picture of SLASH and the text says, "Ernie Ball congratulates
Velvet Revolver Winners for Best Hard Rock Performance." Classy! There's a pic of
a guitar SLASH had autographed with a note that this will be auctioned on ebay
with proceeds to benefit the Casey Lee Ball Foundation, the world's largest private
pediatric kidney foundation.
In an interview, Scott said that he resisted joining VR at first saying that he decided
to get out of rock and the current movement. The nu metal thing just didn't appeal to him.
Mostly, he was just burned out, and he worried that VR would turn out to be just a big
GNR reunion thing. But Duff convinced him and he felt that Dave Kushner would be the wild
card. Scott says he's known Dave a long time. Getting his life back on track was
a well of inspiration for the album. He was in a band with people who had been through the
same experiences and could lay down an instrumental band of music for him to write melodies
and lyrics on top of. Every high intensity that he was feeling was feeling at the time
into one. Without medication to block his feelings, he had a lot to write about...and the
result was Contraband.
Vicki got a Total Guitar from the UK from October 2004. This one is an archive
issue with a Q and A for SLASH. Here are some of the good results:
What was the first riff, song or solo you learned on the guitar?
Probably Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" or Jeff Beck's cover of Stevie Wonder's
"'Cos We've Ended as Lovers".
Is there a riff or lick you wish you'd written?
Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle", Led Zep's "The Ocean", the middle section of "Sabbath
Bloody Sabbath" and Jeff Beck's "Superstition" or Stevie Wonder's "Superstition".
If asked to play at a wedding, what song would you play?
Probably an instrumental version of "A Whiter Shade of Pale". I played it, believe it or not,
at an anti-war rally one time with Jackson Browne. It's just a great melody and translates
well on guitar.
Thanks, Vicki, and we'll do some more another time.
SLASH performed at the Toronto Bluejays game in Canada, their home opener. He played both
the Canadian and the United States national anthems. Here's a picture of our guy rocking
out. And to read all about it, check out the article by clicking on the SLASH pic.
Thanks to Juan and others who sent that in.
