The September 2003 issue of Guitar World (with the Deftones on the cover) does have a small Velvet Revolver write-up with a small picture from the El Rey show (captioned, "from left: Duff McKagan, Scott Weiland and Slash") on page 40: "Flying High Again - Former members of Guns N' Roses and singer Scott Weiland take the stage for the first time as Velvet Revolver - After more than a year of rumor and conjecture, Velvet Revolver-- the supergroup made up of reunited Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum; Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots; and former Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Dave Kushner-- finally confirmed their existence with a press conference and a short performance at Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre. "The June 19 event was timed to coincide with the theatrical release of The Hulk, whose soundtrack features 'Set Me Free,' a new track written and recorded by the band. The song was included in the group's short but sweaty set, along with the Sex Pistols' 'Bodies,' Nirvana's 'Negative Creep,' STP's 'Sex Type Thing,' GNR's 'It's So Easy', and a feedback-laced group composition called 'Slither.' "Although Velvet Revolver are currently without a label, Weiland mentioned from the stage that the band hoped to have an album out by December. The group has written more than 50 songs to date, some of them penned with former GNR guitarist Izzy Stradlin, who-- contrary to rumor-- won't be joining the band on the road or in the studio. "Hanging over the whole evening was the question of whether Weiland's recurring legal troubles-- the singer was arrested on May 18 and charged with possession of heroin and cocaine-- would force Velvet Revolver to find another frontman. But at the press conference, the rest of the band made it clear that they were completely behind their singer. " 'Rock and roll is not, and shouldn't be, a safe thing,' said McKagan, seated behind a table draped and flanked by giant Hulk posters. 'What happened to Scott a few weeks ago could have happened to any of us-- it has happened to all of us. The timing [of his arrest] has caused some skepticism, but we're all dedicated to this thing.
