The excitement for the Pittsburgh Velvet Revolver show started in the early afternoon with fans already lining up to get those coveted spots in front of the stage. By 7, the line was filled with VR T-shirts, Guns 'N Roses T-shirts, Slash T-shirts, and many others. When to gates opened, the fans began a rush to the stage that lasted until after 8. This excitement continued through the two opening acts. Both groups did a good job warming up the fans for the band everyone was waiting for. The first big change we noticed for this show was the added production elements we hadn't seen before. Two jumbotron screens lit up with the familiar album cover art girl gun slinger. After a short promo for the A&E's "Evil's Wild Ride", the crowd got what they came for. VR took the stage and began an hour-plus set. Slash congratulated the Pittsburgh crowd for being the most "rowdy" crowd anywhere. Later, a large sign with "Velvet Revolver" spelled in red lights rose behind Matt. There were many musical highlights during the main set and two encore sets. Throughout the entire performance, Duff and Matt were much more prominent in the vocals, assisting Scott, who was his usual powerful presence. Overall, the sound for this show was much much better than previous shows owing to a new sound setup. All the vocals and instrumental solos came across the cheering crowd with clarity and force. Slash contributed more than his share of memorable moments. During "Set Me Free", Slash and Dave started a "dueling guitar" spot. Dave is a real virtuoso in his own right. Combined with Slash's awesome riffs, it was a real crowd-pleaser. Later, Slash pulled a beautiful, cherry, 12-string over six, double neck from guitar tech, Adam Day, and started into Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". The rowdy audience quickly hushed and were mesmerized by Slash's perfect rendition of the moody intro solo. Duff was right next to Slash providing some added rhythm. With a gesture of respect, Duff yielded the stage to Slash, as the solo gave way to Scott's vocals. The lighters were out in force for this one! Speaking of lighters, everyone one got a kick out of seeing Slash do the into to Slither using a 99 cent Bic lighter as a slide. Slash had many guitar changes during the show. It was great to see Godzilla, his unique acoutsic over electric double neck and the bright, red BC Rich Mockingbird. Scott was able to get the crowd into the show by coming down off the stage and walking back by the sound board area. He had only one security guard escorting and was chanting, "It's all about trust." He was able to get up on a light stand and give a speach about rock 'n roll and then started up a song as he was carried back to the stage. By now, the top hat had come out and Mr. Brownstone got the audience rocking again. The show finished on a high note with everyone wishing it would go on even longer. The VR show is a great live performance by a group of very talented musicians. In their last year of touring, VR has being a very tight band that give 100% every night. You don't want to miss this one!
