The day started for us by going to the venue at 2 pm for a 9 pm start time. When it seemed like not much was happening, we hung out in nearby Station Square and bought a gift for SLASH. We came back in time to see the tour bus pull in. We were told SLASH was on the phone. Duff came out first and waved to everyone there. Dave came out, too. Matt came in a white van. Scott showed up in a black limo. All just jumped out and headed backstage with a quick wave. Then SLASH came out to a lot of cheering. He motioned me over and said he'd talk to me after the show. We went in and had a lot of confusion over the tickets and passes and finally they stashed us at the mixing desk. We watched the show on those big screens. Velvet Revolver is truly the best young rock band out there today. The only one we can compare it to is the Rolling Stones who are nearing the end of their career with a huge back catalog. VR makes due with some covers and their album, and somehow it just explodes. This is our fourth time seeing the band - El Ray was their and our first, then we saw them in Chicago, at a festival in Latrobe and now this one in Pittsburgh. We really could see the growth of the band. They were tight from Day 1 and even now they just explode as a unit. Each man seems tuned into the others and they work together. The great visual effects on those super-sized screens are amazing. The show is not just a rock music show but a whole rock performance show. Scott was absolutely crazed and spent some time in the audience talking to the crowd. SLASH wore that great top hat near the end of the show. At one point, Scott gave a tribute to SLASH. He said...see that man over there...he's a real gunslinger! And SLASH gave a riff in reply. Very cool. Another great SLASH thing was when he played slide guitar with a 98 cent Bic lighter. SLASH is really killer, isn't he? VR went onstage at 9:20, and played till about 11:30. They did two encores. When they left, the venue emptied quickly. Fans were generally well behaved although SLASH told us later that it was a little rough by the stage. After the show, the tour manager came and got us and we had a chance to meet privately with SLASH for which we are always grateful. He's cool, but very well-spoken. We talked about his work with Ray Charles. SLASH said Ray was great but demanding and it brought out the best in every one. He said he has no plans to work with the man who played Ray in the film. Asked about his work at the Grammys, he said he was the musical director and really enjoyed doing that. We asked him about Bono for a friend of ours, a huge Bono fan, and he said...well, Bono came in and wanted to change the words to the song..and chuckled about that. We brought him two CDs to sign and he did that for us and posed for some photos. The bus was pulling out for New York, so we had to let him go although we would have liked to have talk all night! Thanks, SLASH, for that time you could spend with us. As always, we think you are the best!
